Go Borderless Full-Screen-Windowed in TF2!

Postby Atreus on Mon Dec 15, 2008 4:43 am

Here's a great tip that I'm generally surprised more people aren't aware of! I know many of you, like me, absolutely love the full-screen-windowed mode on L4D, right? But, we thought it wasn't possible in TF2 so we all either went Full Screen, or Windowed with a slightly lower resolution. I chose the latter, and always wished I could be full-screen-windowed.

Well, now you can! Here's how:
  1. Right click on "Team Fortress 2" in your "My Games" list and choose Properties.
  2. Choose "Set Launch Options"
  3. Enter the following without the quotes: "-window -noborder -novid"
  4. Click ok, start up TF2, and set your TF2 window size to whatever your desktop is. In my case, it was 1680x1050
  5. That's it, you're done! Enjoy your full screen windowed TF2 where you can alt tab without lag! Additionally, when alt-tabbing out your start bar shows for ease of use!

For the record,
  • -novid isn't related to this. It removes the intro video, which is useful.
  • -window makes it windowed, and
  • -noborder removes the window border.

Make sure to reply if this helped you :)

Sweet! Thanks. I set -novid for L4D as well, makes things start up much more quickly.

This is awesome, thank you :D I always accidentally clicked away from TF2, which would cause it to minimize and often have that stupid invisible players bug, or just straight out crash.

I think it's sort of strange that I read this when I looked up the launch properties and never put it in.

Thanks! :D

Depends on your setup. Usually only by ~3fps or so. Mine is unchanged.

Try running the Steam check file integrity function; I believe it's accessed by clicking Properties for the game from the Steam games window.

I've tried that. I think I might have to just delete tf2 and download it again. Unless its a problem with steam that is.

Re-add the options, including temporarily adding the "-w [width]" parameter at the end to specify the width. Something like 1024 should be fine. After that, you can set your options inside tf2 and remove it again.

For some reason, while rocket jumping (among other things) I click out of the window. Its not that bad since I can just alt tab back, but its annoying for rjing.

Hey, Tried this, encountered exactly the same problem as Manta but, adding the -w[1024] doesn't fix the closing of TF2 after the intro vid. all that the -w[1024] did was remove the border in the window.
Is there any way to just completely remove the setting for this? I've tried Verify Integrity of Game Cache and Uninstalling and Re-installing.
Help! :(

Uh, the brackers are a placeholder. Don't use the bracket.

-w 1024

If you want to get rid of it, just remove the command line parameters

This is indeed awesome! Screw IRC, now I've got Firefox running on a second monitor, and things actually work properly.

Edit: But is the mouse supposed to be...laggy?

Ha, figures you'd use that smiley. :v

The lag is only slight, but I might switch back to fullscreen anyway. It's kinda distracting to browse the forums at the same time.

Why would you browse the forums whilst you frag? Wait until a death on the red team, a round change, or a map change :p

Ah, we were playing a lot of KOTH - 6 second respawns aren't enough time to do much of anything but wait.

Any ideas on how to prevent the sound from muting when you switch apps?

I've done this, the game looks better (if smaller) and it definitely runs and alt-tabs better.

Yeah, I have tf2 filling the whole screen... it's not really "full-screen-windowed" if you leave out the full screen part.
